- The Game-Changer: Jokers. In addition to the 5 runners on the track, each coach has 2 “Jokers” on the bench—fresh athletes ready to be substituted. A coach can make up to two swaps during the race. This single element transforms a predictable footrace into “chess on a track,” providing a coach with 31 different tactical combinations to influence the outcome.
